Harlequins Junior Festival

Northwave’s Nellie Clark (12) was Northland’s sole medallist at the recent Harlequins Junior Festival in Auckland. Nellie won a bronze medal in her 50m breast swim, and was also a top 10 finisher in three of her other races.

Seven Northland clubs sent 41 swimmers along to the junior festival held at Westwave Aquatic Centre. Four junior competitions were held around the country in four regional zones with 1200 under 13-year-old swimmers taking part. Northland swimmers competed at the Harlequins event which also encompassed Auckland and Counties Manukau.

Two of Nellie’s Northwave team-mates also made the top ten in two of their races, Tyler Jepsen (12) and Kayden Kim (10).

Five swimmers from Whangarei Swimming Club made the top 10 – Lucy Nicholls (11) was fourth in 100m breast, with three other top ten placings; Joe Gardner (10) in five races, Tynan van der Veer (10) in three, Montgomery Parkinson (11) and Kaina Whiu-Hemara (11) one apiece.

The Bay of Island Swimming Club’s Emilia Finer (12) placed fourth in 400m free and made six othe top ten places. Her clubmate Ariella Ripohau (10) also managed a top ten finish. Bream Bay’s Hunter Dobson (11) made three top ten finishes, and Matty Douglas (10) from Dargaville made two.
