ASB Northland Secondary Schools Sportswoman of the Year award

Northwave’s Ciara Smith was last night awarded the cr award, capping off a year of impressive achievements.

Highlights from her year include bringing home two silver medals and a bronze from the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games, held in the Bahamas in July. Earlier this month, at the New Zealand Short Course Championships in Auckland, Ciara (16) broke the NZ age group and Open women’s records in 200m breast with a big personal best, taking nearly four seconds off her time. She also broke the NZ age group record in the Open women’s 100m breaststroke final.

In a brief speech following the award presentation, Ciara thanked her family for their support and coach Monica Cooper for her 10-plus years of training.

Ciara and Bream Bay’s Paul Linton were the ASB Northland Secondary School code award winners for swimming. Other swimming finalists were: Annabel Simpson and Madeline Whittam (Northwave); and Archie White (Bay of Islands) and Cameron Ludgate (Whangarei).
