2018 National Age Group Championships

Eighteen of Northland’s top swimmers head to Auckland this week to compete at the c up on the eleven Northlanders who participated last year. This year is the first time the competition has been held at the Sir Owen Glenn National Aquatic Centre on Auckland’s North Shore, and around 700 swimmers from all over the country will battle it out in the pool for five days in 44 events from 17-21 April.

Northwave’s Ciara Smith (17) leads the way for the Northlanders. She is ranked first in all three breaststroke events in the 16-18- year age group and is also ranked in the top 10 for her other two events, 200m IM and 400m IM. Her teammate Tyler Jepsen (13) has seven swims and is ranked in the top 10 for three events, including third place in 400m free. Madeline Whittam (14) is ranked second in 50m and 100m breaststroke, and in the top 10 for 200m breaststroke. Annabell Simpson (17) is ranked in the top 10 for her three backstroke events, second in 200m back.

Bay of Island’s Emilia Finer (13) qualified to swim at all events in her age group at the competition and has chosen to compete in eight. She is ranked in the top 10 for 200m fly, 800m free, 100m fly, 400m free and 200m IM. Teammate Kori Brown (14) is ranked in the top 10 for 100m and 200m breaststroke. Bream Bay’s Paul Linton (17) is ranked in the top 10 in the 16-18- year age group for 50m back.

Other Northland swimmers competing are: Archie White (Bay of Islands); Rose Linton, Luca Matenga, Rebecca Reade, Jackson Somner-Allen, Abby Wright (Bream Bay); Nellie Clark, Nathalie Hull, Quin Walden (Northwave); Grace Hilton-Jones, Cameron Ludgate (Whangarei).
