2019 Aon NZ Open Champs - Preview

Six Northland swimmers will take on the best in the country at the 2019 AON New Zealand Open Championships which start in Auckland next Monday.

Swimmers from all over New Zealand and a range of countries – Australia, China, USA, Fiji, Samoa, Slovakia, the Philippines and Sweden – make up the 312 athletes competing at the Sir Owen Glenn National Aquatic Centre in Rosedale, that number also including 24 Para swimmers.

This year’s NZ Opens is the qualifying event for the 18th FINA World Championships in Korea next month and for the 2019 World Para Swimming Championships in London in September.

Whangarei Swimming Club’s Cameron Leslie (29) will have his eye on a place in that world champs team. Look out for him in 50m backstroke and freestyle and 200m freestyle.

Northwave’s Ciara Smith (18) is another one to watch. She is at the top of the rankings for both 100m and 200m breaststroke, and third in 50m breaststroke. She is also in the top ten hopefuls in the 200m and 400m individual medleys.

Also competing are Northwave’s Nellie Clark (15) in 50m and 100m breaststroke, Madeline Whittam (15) 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke, Tyler Jepsen (14) 200m backstroke; and Bream Bay’s Rebecca Reade (16) in 100m and 200m backstroke.
