Aon New Zealand Swimming Championships 2021

Eight Northland swimmers are off to test themselves against the country’s best at the 2021 Aon New Zealand Swimming Championships next week.

Running from 5-10 April at the Sir Owen Glenn National Aquatic Centre in Auckland, 306 swimmers from 56 clubs around New Zealand will vie for the title of national champion and a place on the team travelling to Tokyo later this year for the 2021 Olympics. Last year’s national championships (previously knows as NZ Opens) was cancelled due to Covid-19 and the Olympics delayed.

Whangarei’s Cameron Leslie is one of 22 para swimmers competing at the championships. He will swim in four individual events and will look to be part of the New Zealand Para Swimming Team heading to the Olympics. He currently has two World Para Swimming records still standing (50m freestyle S4 and 150m IM S4)

Northlanders competing at the NZ Championships next week are:

Bream Bay Swim Club: Kori Brown (17) men’s 100m breast; 200m breast, 200m back, 50m back; Emilia Finer (16) women’s 400m IM, 100m fly; 200m fly; 200m IM, Luca Matenga (17) men’s 100m breast; Rebecca Reade (18) women’s 100m back, 100m fly, 200m back; Ariella Ripohau (14) women’s 100m back, 200m back.

Northwave: Ciara Smith (20) 400m IM, 200m breast, 50m breast, 100m breast; Madeline Whittam (17) women’s 400m IM, 200m breast, 50m breast, 100m breast.

Whangarei Swim Club: Cameron Leslie (31) men’s 200m free; 50m back, 50m free, 100m free.
